Symbolic AI fell by the wayside at the beginning of the AI winter. More recently, with powerful GPUs making ML and other statistical AI approaches feasible, symbolic AI has not seen anywhere near as much investment. There are still companies I know of that do symbolic AI (such as https://www.cyc.com), but I very rarely hear of new research in the field.
