Three House chairmen launch investigation into Trump's purge at Homeland Security

Three top Democrats are launching an inquiry into the "unprecedented actions" Donald Trump recently took to purge the top layer of officials from the Department of Homeland Security. In a letter to Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan on Thursday, the chairmen of the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Homeland Security committees said Trump's sweeping moves jeopardized the nation's national security.

"We are deeply concerned that the firing and forced resignation of these officials puts the security of the American people at risk," wrote Reps. Elijah Cummings, Jerry Nader, and Bennie Thompson.

Giving a deadline of May 9, the Democratic chairs requested all communications in the first several months of 2019 related to the departure or possible departure of: ex-DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, ex-Secret Service chief Randolph "Tex" Alles, ex-acting DHS deputy secretary Claire Grady, withdrawn ICE chief nominee Ronald Vitiello, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Lee Francis Cissna, and DHS general counsel John Mitnick.

The Democrats also homed in specifically on the communications of anti-immigrant hawk and Trump aide Stephen Miller with nine of the agency's top officials, including Nielsen and McAleenan himself.

Trump has promised to fight “all” Democratic subpoenas, and this request for information promises to be another exercise in Trump administration obstruction.
