The University of Virginia’s men’s basketball team won the NCAA championship—and now they’ve joined the list of championship-winning teams to decide not to go to the White House to celebrate and have their achievement recognized.
Coach Tony Bennett was very polite about it, saying that “With several players either pursuing pro opportunities or moving on from UVA, it would be difficult, if not impossible to get everyone back together. We would have to respectfully decline an invitation.” But sophomore forward De’Andre Hunter, who will be heading to the NBA draft, retweeted the official announcement with the addition “No thanks, Trump” and two laughing emojis.
This is the third year in a row of the NCAA men’s basketball champions not visiting the White House. In 2017, the University of North Carolina cited scheduling difficulties … but only after the team’s coach had said that “our president tweets out more bulls**t than anybody I’ve ever seen.” In 2018, the White House failed to invite champion team Villanova, so UVA might be declining an invitation that would never have come.
