After 14 years waving to students, hundreds of kids turn out to say goodbye to their 'Waving Granny'

Tinney Davidson and her husband moved into their Comox, British Columbia, home in 2007. Their home was situated right near the local high school, and early on Davidson began waving from her window to students as they walked to and from school. After her husband passed away, Tinney Davidson continued waving in the mornings and afternoons. The kids loved it and waved back.

She told Chek News that it began rather simply. “I just liked the look of the children and they all looked in and I thought if they’re looking in, I’ll wave to them and that’s how it started.” Now 88 years old, Davidson is soon moving to a retirement home. Students from the high school found out and decided to give her one last big wave. Over 400 students showed up to wave to Davidson while she sat outside on the porch, blew kisses, and gave out hugs.

The school’s art teacher, Charlotte Hood-Tanner, told ABC News back in 2016 that Davidson “just doesn’t miss a minute waving at those kids. She's lived in the community forever. She's very connected to the kids and she has all sorts of funny stories about them waving to her. She gets a kick out of it. She's a fireball, she's full of love, she's a ton of fun and I think it keeps her young."

A couple of years ago some students presented Davidson with Valentine’s gifts to show their appreciation to the Waving Granny. At the time Davidson told CBC Canada, "Well, I think I'm just the luckiest lady alive, really and truly. I have so much joy from them." The world is just a little better knowing that Tinney Davidson is in it, right?

If you want to read something about waving to strangers, head on over to this Daily Kos community member’s diary. You can watch video of the event here. Tissues may be needed because it’s apparently allergy season in British Columbia.
