Democrats call on Trump administration not to spend farm bailout money on foreign companies

Donald Trump started a series of trade wars that have left U.S. farmers in the lurch, so Trump put billions into bailouts for farmers. Now, Senate Democrats are pressing to be sure that the bailout money isn’t going to foreign-owned companies.

The government bought $5 million of pork from a Brazilian-owned company, and a Chinese-owned company was in line for a bailout buy until the plan drew bad publicity. “It is unacceptable that American taxpayers have been subsidizing our competitors through trade assistance,” a group of Democratic lawmakers wrote to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. “We ask that you ensure these commodity purchases are carried out in a manner that most benefits the American farmer’s bottom line—not the business interests of foreign corporations.”

Sens. Debbie Stabenow, Sherrod Brown, Chuck Schumer, Patrick Leahy, Richard Blumenthal, Patty Murray, Amy Klobuchar, Tammy Baldwin, and Kirsten Gillibrand signed on to the letter.

”Whether it’s the WH Group, which is closely tied to the Chinese government, or JBS SA, which is benefiting from the U.S’s loss of market share in certain countries, it is counterproductive and contradictory for these companies to receive assistance paid for with U.S. taxpayer dollars intended to help American farmers struggling with this Administration’s trade policy,” they wrote.

And that’s the thing. Whatever you think about nativism, it’s absurd to first create problems for U.S. farmers by instigating a trade war, then try to solve those problems with a bailout, only to use bailout money to benefit companies owned from some of the very same countries involved in the trade war.
