In a long series of tweets on Saturday afternoon, Republican Congressman Justin Amash announced that he believed Attorney General William Barr had “deliberately misrepresented” the contents of the Mueller report and then went on to say that Donald Trump “has engaged in impeachable offenses.” After an extended series of statements on the Mueller report—a report he says few in Congress have bothered to even read—Amash concludes that “contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment.”
Amash is no Democrat, and certainly no liberal. The Michigan rep considers himself a libertarian, and a strict interpreter of the Constitution. But, unlike fellow “libertarian” Rand Paul, Amash has failed to find anything in the Constitution that says Donald Trump gets to do as he likes with no repercussions.
Republicans were so upset last week when Senator Richard Burr issued a subpoena to Donald Trump Jr that it called for days of criticism on the Senate floor and hours of talk on Fox News about how Burr was “dominated” by his Democratic colleagues. So they’re probably not going to like this.
But from now on, the call for Trump’s impeachment—is a bipartisan call. Amash is the first. Hopefully, he won’t be the last, especially as more documents, and more hearings, bring to light addition evidence and force Republicans to face the truth of the special counsel’s report.
