Acting defense secretary orders Trump-USS McCain scandal looked into, but not formally investigated

Donald Trump’s acting defense secretary is being squirrelly and evasive about what his office knew and when about the White House request to keep the USS John McCain out of Trump’s sight in Japan. In a Friday press conference, Patrick Shanahan came up with a series of ways to disclaim knowledge of or responsibility for the inappropriate request and its handling by the military.

“Our business is to run military operations and not to become politicized,” he said, except that the question at hand is how his subordinates responded to an effort to politicize military operations.

Shanahan has told his chief of staff “to look into the matter, and that’s different than saying ‘launch a formal investigation.’” Can’t have a formal investigation, can we? Shanahan’s office also “did a quick—and I would say a not exhaustive look” at its emails to see if the matter had reached it beforehand, “and we received none” … at least, according to a not-exhaustive search.

So we have someone looking into the matter but not investigating it, and people searching their email but not exhaustively. My, what a strong commitment to find out whether the White House inappropriately politicized the military.
