Equal pay, equal say: Women finally fill upper echelons of Democratic presidential campaigns

"It is about fucking time that this has happened — and you can quote me on that," Anne Caprara, who headed Hillary Clinton's 2016 Super PAC, told Politico of female staffers finally becoming a dominant force in 2020 Democratic presidential campaigns.

A recent analysis by the news outlet showed that women are wielding real power and influence within the campaigns of Democratic hopefuls, and they are getting compensated at equitable levels to men. Politico pinpointed 31 women as central players out of 53 top decision makers in the 2020 campaigns of Amy Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Marianne Williamson.

Women also accounted for more than 50% of key players (13 of 24 positions) in the top-tier campaigns of Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg.

Caprara tells Politico that women working on campaigns in recent cycles routinely earned $10,000 to $20,000 less than their male counterparts.

One glaring exception is the position of campaign manager, where men still rule the day in the top-tier campaigns. Once the scope is widened out though, six of the 22 Democrats seeking the nomination hired women into that role. In 2018, however, women managed some 40% of the Democratic congressional campaigns.

Politico found that pay equity ruled the day in the campaigns of both female and top-tier male candidates. It also found that other campaigns had some variation. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren distinguished her campaign by just setting a flat salary for her senior team: seven women and six men all earn $156,000 for the contributions they make to her candidacy.
