Ryan J. Salsman has been charged with a felony hate crime, as well as reckless conduct and misdemeanor aggravated assault charges, after the 36-year-old allegedly spent an evening yelling racial slurs and shooting an air rifle at neighbors. Salsman is reported to have stood in his bedroom window, “Shooting an air rifle toward an African-American man and a Hispanic woman who were talking in their driveway.”
These events took place in Kane County, Illinois, on July 27 at 10 PM, but Salsman wasn’t charged until August 7. On August 2, according to the Chicago Sun Times, Salsman was booked into Kane County Jail for violating a bail bond on unrelated charges. The Chicago Tribune reports that police gathered evidence and presented it for the new charges this week. As of now, Salsman remains in custody on $54,200 bail, with a court date scheduled for Friday, August 9.
