Live coverage of third Democratic presidential debate, #1

The third debate of the Democratic candidates for the presidency is on. Your candidates for tonight have been winnowed down to (in alphabetical order):

former Vice President Joe Biden. Sen. Cory Booker. Mayor Pete Buttigieg. former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro. Sen. Kamala Harris. Sen. Amy Klobuchar. former Rep. Beto O'Rourke. Sen. Bernie Sanders. Sen. Elizabeth Warren. entrepreneur Andrew Yang.

The debate is hosted by ABC News and Univision, and is being held at Texas Southern University, a historically black university in Houston. The moderators are ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos, World News Tonight anchor and managing editor David Muir, ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis, and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos.

Good evening, folks. The media seems to be working to a pre-built narrative that this debate is “Biden, Warren, and whoever gets seat #3.” That’s a convenient setup for commentators who want nothing more than infighting, rather than information. But it’s not likely the actual debate will be anywhere near that neat.

Julian Castro starts off with a hopeful “there will be life after Donald Trump” before going into his intro. Way to warm up the crowd.

Klobuchar starts off with humor about Trump’s loudness and lying. Sums herself up … but seems to run a bit out of steam in the middle of her talk and issues kind of mild pre-attacks on policies. Already this format is tougher for her than the climate townhall.

Cory Booker … always has a great way of being upbeat while being serious. The guy can be genuinely inspirational and he kicks off his intro well.
