Just a few weeks ago the NRA poured an unprecedented amount of money into the coffers of the Virginia House of Delegate leader, a Republican, looking for a backstop in this key state that's on the cusp of flipping blue. To help counter that, former Rep. Gabby Giffords' gun safety group has endorsed 41 Democratic candidates in Virginia and she went to the state on Friday to rally with them.
That very same day that Giffords was in Virginia, Republican state state Sen. Amanda Chase released a Facebook ad showing her aiming a handgun with the tag line "I'm not afraid to shoot down gun groups." The same day Gabby Giffords, whose congressional career ended when she was shot by a would-be assassin, was in Virginia talking about the issue this Republican releases that ad.
In the ensuing outrage, Chase pulled the ad and changed the tag line to read "I'm not afraid to shoot down any attacks by anti-gun groups, because gun rights are women's rights." She blamed the initial ad on a rogue digital media company she hired to make it.
She said the "ludicrous unauthorized" message was a mistake and she meant to make this about "women's rights" all along. "This has nothing to do with me toning down my message; it has everything to do with the digital media company we just recently hired screwing up our original approved ad," she said.
Chase also vowed to release the name of the company by noon Monday if it hadn't publicly apologized. As of 12:15, it hadn't happened. Like the Virginia Democrats said, "we're starting to think it was all her idea."
Give now to turn Virginia blue and give the NRA a major loss!
