The man who filmed the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery by two white men was arrested Thursday and charged with murder, making him the third person charged in the killing. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested 50-year-old William "Roddie" Bryan Jr. after previously charging Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34, with murder and aggravated assault of Arbery, who was Black, earlier this month. Bryan is also charged with criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.
Attorneys for the parents of Arbery, who was killed while jogging in late February, expressed relief. "We want anyone who participated in the murder of Mr. Arbery to be held accountable," they said in a statement, adding that they were grateful for the "diligence" the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has shown in investigating the case. GBI took control of the case earlier this month after local authorities failed to arrest anyone for Arbery’s murder for more than two months.
Lee Merritt, the attorney for Arbery's mother, had been calling for Bryan's arrest in connection with the killing.
“Right now, we know that he recorded this video from a very close proximity. According to his attorney, he was home one minute and within minutes, he was behind Ahmaud Arbery with his cell phone, recording his ambush,” Arbery family attorney Lee Merritt said during an appearance Monday on the Tamron Hall Show.
“His response to this very loud, violent shotgun shots repeatedly, and someone being murdered in front of him, was silence. He just kept recording. You didn’t hear him gasp. He didn’t cut off the camera. He didn’t intervene. He didn’t honk his horn. And we believe that is because he knew what was about to happen, and he played a role in it.”
Bryan's attorney had previously pleaded with Merritt to stop calling for his client’s arrest.
Bryan's name did appear in the original police report for the incident on the day of the shooting, according to NPR. "Gregory McMichael told police that after he and Travis attempted and failed to stop Arbery, 'Roddy' tried to intercept him, according to the report," writes NPR.
