Trouble is brewing at the Fox News network, where Fox News general assignment reporter Doug McKelway fired off an email to dozens of staffers this week after seeing Joe Biden’s launch video, which centered around the deeply unsettling and dangerous white supremacists rally that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017. Biden said he was so troubled by the rally and the growing white supremacist movement that he knew he had to run. He cited Donald Trump’s infuriating comments that there were “very fine people on both sides” of the rally.
McKelway decided to send an email in defense of Donald Trump’s grossly inappropriate comments, apparently trying to rally his colleagues to defend Donald Trump against Biden’s comments, claiming they were out of context. While he did initially get one response bolstering his Trump defense with a “first amendment” argument, another colleague, Fox News Radio White House correspondent Jon Decker, erupted at his fellow Fox News reporters saying, “Your posts read like something you’d read on a White Supremacist chat room.”
The Daily Beast obtained the leaked emails and this is no doubt making for some awkward water cooler chat in the Fox newsroom today.
McKelway contrasted portions of Biden’s script against the same quotes that pro-Trump outlets have used to claim the president never defended white nationalists. And then the reporter highlighted a quote from his own interview with Brian Lambert, an armed Unite the Right attendee, who portrayed the neo-Nazi rallygoers as victims: “They’re denying people their right to assemble. They’re denying their right to speak freely, however hateful their views may be,” he bemoaned.
Moments later, Fox News digital senior editor Cody Derespina replied-all, agreeing with McKelway, and adding to a snippet of a Fox News interview with Jarrod Kuhn, a Charlottesville marcher who claimed he was not a white supremacist, but simply there to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
In fact, the man Derespina mentioned is a white supremacist and has a criminal record as such. To his credit, Derespina did walk back his comments later in the thread, but not before Decker blasted them both.
