Whenever I get asked why I got into immigration activism, my answer is always the same: because I see myself in the families who are today seeking new lives here.
My mom came to the U.S from Mexico 40 years ago. Her childhood was as poor as it can get. I remember the stories she’d tell us about picking cotton as a child and selling bread door-to-door. I think it was her life experiences that influenced her decision to come here. She wanted something different for her own kids.
My mom's life experiences also influenced my decision to join Daily Kos. When I see the parents and children at our border, carrying with them nothing more than some clothes and their hope for a better future, I see my family. And I’ve decided that, as long as I’ve got a voice and a platform like Daily Kos, I’m going to keep fighting for them until they get the same chance my family got.
Immigration activism, especially now, can feel like you’re screaming into a void. It feels like the day’s news can’t possibly get worse, and then you’re proven wrong. But we’re also a community with the power to create change. I know it because I’ve seen it. Last summer, it was your activism that raised thousands of dollars to aid in the reunification of families torn apart at the border.
Daily Kos matters because we also get to lift up the names that too often get overlooked, like the Dreamers, who despite not being able to cast a ballot in last year’s historic midterm elections, helped get out the vote for progressive candidates. They did this even as their own lives hung in the balance. They’re the epitome of resilience—and their voices deserve to keep being heard.
Lifting up the voices of those most affected by the administration’s anti-immigrant policies will be all the more important as we head into a presidential election in which so much will be at stake. I know why I’ll keep fighting. It’ll be for those families at the border, for the brave Dreamers, and for people like my mom. But to keep doing that, I need your help.
