Donald Trump wants to deport Dreamers, and now. The administration is calling on the Supreme Court to say if it will soon hear a case around the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The reason is clear: Trump is seeking “to officially end the popular and successful program,” immigrant rights advocacy group America’s Voice said.
Lower courts have already forced the administration to partially resurrect DACA following Trump's decision to rescind the program in the fall of 2017, ensuring that current and former beneficiaries can continue to renew their two-year work permits and protection from deportation. But now a “frustrated” administration, CNN reports, wants to know by next month if the justices will take up the case.
“If the Supreme Court takes up a DACA case,” America’s Voice continued, “it will be heard during 2020, injecting the question of Dreamers’ futures into the political and public consciousness during a presidential election year.” CBS News reports that the administration’s solicitor general “suggested that efforts by Congress to address the situation of those covered under DACA were being stymied by the ongoing court cases.”
Hilarious. There’s been nothing stopping Congress from acting on legislation to permanently protect undocumented youth, and only under new Democratic leadership is a bill that would put DACA recipients onto a path to citizenship, the Dream and Promise Act of 2019, finally on its way to a floor vote in the House, after years of blockading from former Republican speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan.
The administration is seeking to deport Dreamers faster as a new survey shows that voters in key 2020 states show immense enthusiasm for putting DACA recipients, along with Temporary Protected Status holders, onto a path to legal status.” The Immigration Hub-commissioned polling “found that 74% of Colorado voters, 71% of Pennsylvania voters, and 78% percent of Michigan voters, believe that the United States government should offer a path to citizenship for Dreamers and TPS-holders.”
