House Oversight chair asks Stephen Miller to testify on his 'troubling' anti-immigrant policies

White House aide and white supremacist Stephen Miller has designed or helped craft the most inhumane and barbaric policies of the Trump administration, including family separation at the southern border, but save for a few disastrous media and press appearances, he has largely stayed behind the scenes. Following a recent purge of top administration officials that was likely orchestrated by him, the chair of the House Oversight Committee would like to have a word.

“I am inviting you to testify before the committee,” Chair Elijah E. Cummings writes in a letter to Miller, “because it appears that you are one of the primary moving forces behind some of the most significant—and in my view, troubling—immigration policies coming out of the Trump White House.” Of course, the arrogant White House staffer will likely refuse the invitation, something acknowledged by Cummings.

“I understand that you may not want to submit yourself to rigorous questioning by a full panel of Committee Members, some of whom have grave concerns about your views and your actions,” he continues. “However, since President Trump recently announced that you are ‘in charge of handling all immigration and border affairs,’ it makes sense for Congress to hear directly from you about how federal agencies are implementing your policies.” 

Will a White House staffer try to claim executive privilege? He probably will. Cummings also acknowledged, according to the Washington Post, “that White House advisers do not testify before congressional committees.” But Miller sure has been acting a lot like a Homeland Security secretary, and if that department’s former head Kirstjen Nielsen had to testify, then why shouldn’t Miller? House Democrats need to remember that voters want them to conduct oversight, and now they have subpoena power. So fucking use it, and let him fight it if that’s the road he wants to take.
